LaHatte School Adenture and Beyond

Today the group (not including Andrew, Chris, Juanita, and Stan) went to the Lahatte school on the mountain. This is Aimee by the way..
we drove down the highway, crusing along at dangerous speeds of course. Then we turned onto the mountain road and i tell ya, there were many times i thought we were gunna die. The natural speed mountains every five seconds and super sharp turns on the river bed, made for an interesting ride. When we got to the school, I was surprised to see the two large school building, and so many children in there school outfits! so adorable! Anyway, the point of our mission was to go into the neighboring area around LaHatte and plant the Moranga tree, which is a very nutritious and low-maintence tree which we believe will help the people of LaHatte become healthier and stronger. We split into groups and went on our way each carrying 50 bottles of water and 25 moranga trees. that might seem like not very much but when you have to carry that 3 miles up and down hills, it becomes VERY heavy and it even feels like its getting heavier every mile. yayyy. i have never felt like fainting so many times in one morning, it was so hot and so tiring. thank goodness i had nurse Alyssa with me to keep me hydrated and standing on my feet! it got better after lunch though! We went to about 12 ish houses and saw many beautiful children! it was hard to see them and not be able to give them anything. it was really encouraging and humbling to see these kids with practically nothing to call their own and sometimes no food for nearly 2 days, but nonetheless they were happy! smiling, laughing, and joking! i had a few girls take my hand and gasp and giggle at the whitness of my hand. they would look at there hand then back to mine and laugh. they found my pale skin quite funny and amazing. it was fun planting the trees and meeting new people and praying with them. it was really a learning experience in many ways. the way our team felt when we planted our last tree, wow, what a rewarding feeling!
so as a result of this trying, tiring, amazing day, i am sore, burnt to a crisp, and completely blessed by the people around me.
the majority of the people we saw today was children, so we did a tally of all the childrens toys we saw today with all the teams: 1. Mom, when Kayley begs for a new toy, please remind her of the many boys and girls in Haiti who are playing with accorns and random pieces of garbage and having a blast!

We finished our day by sitting in the cabana, hearing the waves crash on the beach, watching the sun set, and hearing the wild stories of everyones day. Time for bed! Goodnight from Haiti. :)

Don't worry Kaden, mom still thinks your cuter ;P

  5. Great work team - I'm praying for you every day. When you mentioned all the school uniforms I remembered how Mom & I (& maybe Cheryl but I doubt she ever liked to sew) made a pattern, bought bolts of lite-wt denim & red gingham & frantically sewed girls' uniform jumpers while our family's menfolk were doing construction there so many years ago. I bet that old beater of a sewing machine is still running - it was an antique but the best we had.
Write down your experiences, your thoughts and insights because these realities will fade so quickly when you return to Canada.
God bless you all. Connie Dueck Harms
