Well, we have all arrived safely and are settled in at the mission compound quite nicely. The poverty here is quite discouraging and the mess the earhquake has made is a sorry sight. As one of our team members put it "Driving through Port Au Prince was like watching a documentary." People walking around and scrounging through piles of debris trying to find anything they can build with or eat. The stink is also terrible - smells like a burning dump. Here at the compound things are quite relaxed and in overall good and comfortable shape. We have running cold water, hydro which comes and goes as it pleases - even in the middle of cooking supper - and a nice ocean view. All of us have been busy doing different things so far, Juanita, Andrew, Aimee and Joleen in the kitchen; Eldon, Stan, and Adam on electrical repairs; Chris, Phil and Darryl on concrete and Alyssa, Sheila, Christy, Steve on various other tasks, and Jared has been chasing geckos with his camera. (Just buggin him, he's been working hard too) Our contact with the locals has been limited but friendly so far. Please feel sorry for us as we had to wear shorts and t-shirts due to the balmy weather. We're looking forward to church tomorrow (which starts at 8am) and hope to meet more people there. We will try to post some pictures tomorrow.
